Don’t look down: Staying Focus in the midst of Your Storm

There are so many things in this world, and in each one of us life’s, that can get us distracted from what’s before us; more importantly, on what #God is doing and about to do in our lives; and where we are going spiritually, career-wise, physically and emotionally. Things such as: unpaid bills, marital and family issues, problems in our social relationships and at work, financial ‘cobwebs’ amongst others. In these times it is very easy for us to focus on what the enemy is doing in our life’s rather than what God is doing or about to do.

It is very easy for us, like #Peter, to stop focusing our attention on Jesus and look at the boisterous wind around. We read the story in Matthew 14:22-33 that Jesus sent his disciples to go before him while he went aside to pray in the mountain. While the disciples were in the boat going to the other side the wind became very boisterous, tossing the ship. In the 4th hour of the night (between 3-6am) they Jesus coming towards them.

Now imagine you’re in the middle of the sea, the wind tossing the ship causing water to pour in. You’re in deep trouble and probably thinking the ship is going to sink, and then you saw a ‘spirit’ walking towards you. No wonder the disciples ”cried out for fear”. Jesus immediately being aware of their fear identified himself unto them. Isn’t it so interesting that sometimes we come upon situations in our life and we immediately start seeing the situation as a problem and one we are not able to handle? We started being afraid of what’s not really there. You can read the whole story at Matthew 14:22-33. Peter’s faith in Jesus commandment and obedience cause him to start walking on the boisterous water. However, Peter whose eyes were fixed upon Jesus looked down and got distracted. On seeing the boisterous water and realizing what he was doing lost his focus and his faith and started sinking. Peter was able to walk on water because he walked on the word of God.

Many of us are like Peter, we started walking with faith, walking ‘on water’, having our eyes on Jesus because we know that he is with us and have our concerns in the palm of his hands, moreover he has given us the power over the works of the enemy (2 Corinthians 10:3-6; Ephesians 6:10-18), but somewhere along the road we got distracted and stop looking ahead of us on Jesus and maintaining our faith in him believing that he is able to bring us through and started focusing on the boisterous winds around us.

Life is very unpredictable and even cruel at times, but God has promise us that he will never allow us to go through more than what we are able to bear; and even then he will give us what we need to overcome (1 Corinthians 10:13). There is nothing that we may face that he have not experience while on earth (if not personally he had close friends and acquaintances that went through something similar), he is therefore able to bring us through any and everything (Hebrews 2:10-18; 4:14-16). Jesus didn’t allow Peter to sink in his physical water when Peter cried out with faith unto him, he likewise will not allow you to sink or go under the depth of your situations.

When you consider an eagle you think of a bird with strong winds flying through the midst of the storm going higher and higher. The eagle loves to test its strength as it knows the strength of its wings, and thus loves the storm. Each one of us are like eagles and God is our wings. God did not carry you this far for you to sink and drown in the midst of all that is happening around you (Isaiah 46:1-4). You are strong and well-able to conquer the army that is coming against you, as you have God fighting with you. Keep your eyes on Jesus ever remembering his words written in the Bible and personal prophesies.

Sometimes it is when we are about to receive our breakthrough or reach the end of our burdens that we give up and lose hope. Each situation comes to make us stronger and be a better person. When we are out of our wilderness situation we will be able to help others to come out of theirs as God has give each one of us the keys to unlock someone else’s deliverance. I encourage you to find bible verses that speaks about your situations and personalized them, e.g. ”…With #men it is impossible, but not with God: for with God all things are possible.”- Mark 10:27.
