More than three-quarters of 11 to 16-year-olds have yet to load a washing machine, the survey found.

The study showed that more than a third – 35 per cent – have never cooked a meal, and 92 per cent have never done the household shopping.

The findings were taken from an online survey of more than a thousand 11 to 25-year-olds in the UK conducted last month for The ‘s Society to coincide with a young carers’ festival this weekend.

The charity said that it was hoping to highlight the ‘stark’ contrast between the life of an average teenager, and an estimated 175,000 young carers in the UK who carry out similar household from as young as five.
