Four Ways to Move Forward With Life During a Complex Bereavement

The death of any loved one can leave you broken inside. It is never easy for you to lose your best friend in life. You could feel empty, as if there is nothing left to live for. The feeling of sadness may never go away. The important thing is to start taking care of yourself. Your spouse likely would not be happy seeing you continuing to grieve. They want you to continue on living your life and being the awesome person you are. Either way, you might be finding yourself in a complex bereavement process you are unsure of how to handle. There are ways to move forward, even if it seems impossible.

Consider taking some of these steps to make sure you can move forward:

1.) The Stages of Grief. You often hear about having to go through the stages of grief until you reach acceptance. It’s not an easy thing for anyone to do. You’re usually not looking to move on. You could still be stuck with the same feelings of sadness that have been going through your head since your spouse passed. Being able to go through denial, anger, resentment, yearning, suffering, sadness and at the end of it all, acceptance, will be the biggest challenge for you.

2.) Follow The Wishes of Your Best Friend. If your spouse died and they made special requests after their passing, it could help you to move on from this by enacting those wishes. Whether that be placing flowers on their grave or taking a trip somewhere, this can be where you remember them most fondly. It’s as if they are still there and you are both spending time together. Making sure this happens could be the one thing that finally helps you to move forward.

3.) You Don’t Have to Forget Them. One thing widows may feel bad about is the idea of moving forward. It might seem as if moving forward means you could forget the ones you love. It seems unlikely you may ever forget who this person was or what they meant to you. Reminding yourself they will always remain a special part of you and that there is an avenue forward for you in life will be the final steps toward a new beginning.

4.) Look For Love Again. With the death of your loved one, you might encounter feelings of betrayal, which can be very tough. It might feel like betrayal to go out and date someone else. That may indeed be the toughest thing since you might not ever be able to stop what exactly has occurred. Looking toward a brighter future for yourself means you might have to take a chance on someone else in your life.

Being able to accept what happened is not easy. However, in time, you will be able to move on and see a future where things can improve. You might not want to forget your spouse because of the impact they had on your life. The complex bereavement may have a huge grip over your life. Yet when considering other options for love after reaching the point of acceptance, you might find companionship and meaning to everything you do once again.
